De charme van een porseleinen wasbak

The charm of a porcelain sink

Porcelain. From figurines to plates and real washbowls, baked earthenware has a long history in the Flemish living room. It also remains a winner in the bathroom. Furnified searched for and found the charm of the porcelain sink.

Porcelain is durable

Your first encounter with this white glazed object was probably during a sleepover at grandma and grandpa. A white bowl with curved edges and an ornate gold faucet in a bathroom with tiles in pastel shades, something like that. Ring a bell ? Those tiles and taps have been replaced today by the mortex look and sleek black accessories , but that porcelain basin is still there.

Porcelain is therefore sustainable. After an intensive firing process, the natural material will last for years. The glaze as a top layer ensures good scratch resistance. The smooth surface is a blessing for maintenance. Toothpaste slides right off, make-up powder can be wiped off immediately with a damp cloth. Multi-purpose and little cleaning work? We love that!

Porcelain is timeless

Porcelain is white because of the type of clay they add during the creation process. White is a flat, calm color that forms the basis of many interiors. Together with the sustainable character and the low maintenance that is required, you get a result that many designers aspire to: a material with a look and feel that always fits.

By the way, did you know that the word 'misfire' comes from the porcelain industry? When the process of making porcelain became established in Europe in the 18th century, an inspection round took place after firing. Everything that was fried too low or too high went out. This is how the 'mis-fires' were born (and immediately thrown away again).

Now that we go back in time: making porcelain has been going on for thousands of years, all the way to China in the 7th century. What began with the discovery of precious jade evolved over time into painted porcelain dishes. Because the pottery is odorless and tasteless and hardly discolours, it was used early on for serving food. That can count in terms of timelessness.

Porcelain also has style

The arched bowl from the grandma is no longer there, but porcelain is still a bathroom essential today when you think about renovating. The material has only improved and a few things have also changed in terms of design.

Today you can choose from round or square basins, with a high or low rim, a straight or slanted finish … the choice is immense. Furnified explains some styles.

  • Round is romantic: precisely because there are no hard lines in it, you go for a 'soft' look with this washbasin model. To have? Then choose Alexis I or Alexis III . A soft style for a strong look. Classic!
  • Justice brings peace: the fans of minimalism are happy with Alexis IX . The straight lines and low edge give your bathroom a sober, sleek look. Ideal for smaller bathrooms or for those who want to create atmosphere with accessories but prefer to keep the basics simple.
  • Rounded law: because that also exists, of course, even in different degrees. Alexis IV , V and VII are white porcelain basins that combine the best of both worlds. For bathroom fanatics who would like to do something different, or who simply cannot choose: we got you!

Furnified goes for affordable design that you haven't seen elsewhere. We also look for unique designs for something like a simple porcelain wash bowl. Which washbasin do you choose?
