Je studentenkamer stijlvol inrichten met een klein budget

Furnish your student room stylishly with a small budget

Are you currently still stuck with your nose in the books during your exams or are you still enjoying a well-deserved holiday? In a few weeks the new academic year will start again and for many students that means that they will return to their accommodation. Those who move into a student room enjoy freedom and less control, the feeling of finally being able to stand on their own two feet. And that independence also applies to the furnishing of your room. How do you get the most out of your little abode and how do you give it personality? We give it to you in a few tips.

Make the most of your space

Before you drag a double bed into your room, you better think twice. A room is often on the tight side and a loft bed is a better solution. This way you create extra space under your bed, where you can install a desk, dressing room or cozy sitting area. Your room will look a lot bigger in no time. Want to recreate a sense of space even more? You do this by working with light colors and an accent wall in a bright color or wallpaper with a retro motif.

Practically furnish your room

A room is more than just a place to sleep. You study and relax there, eat there, socialize with friends and devour countless television series on your laptop. To set up your room as a kind of multifunctional house where you can do all these things, it is best to demarcate certain zones. You do this through a well-thought-out furniture arrangement - use your bookcase as a room divider, for example - or work with curtains or folding screens. For example, place your desk and cupboard at right angles to each other. That way you have a demarcated study area and you cannot see your books from your bed or easy chair. Conversely, you won't get distracted so easily at your desk that way.

Don't go light on lighting

You use your room for various activities. Your lighting must also be adapted to this. In the first instance, make sure you have a decent desk lamp that allows for long study sessions and that doesn't tire your eyes too much. For your general lighting, choose spotlights that illuminate the room well. This way you can see in the morning whether you wear blue or black trousers with your outfit. Need more atmosphere? Then mood lamps, lanterns or a large standing lamp provide more intimacy than terrible fluorescent lighting.

Privacy is key

Do you have a room on the ground floor or at the back garden of the building? Then passers-by can often peek inside. Do you prefer to change in the morning without spectators? Then not only curtains are a good investment to keep your room dark. Also consider budget-friendly window film. This lets in natural daylight but keeps prying eyes out.

East West home is best

Going to a student room often means being able to start with a fresh slate and leave the home front behind. With the latter one has it a bit more difficult than the other. Furnishing your room from scratch may seem like a good idea, but bringing something from home ensures that you will feel at home faster. Bring a nice cabinet, a carpet or maybe even some photos or a cozy lamp. This way you are spared from homesickness for the first few weeks.

But don't forget your personality either

Even if you miss the home front and you might take some nice mementos with you, your room will still be your home and you can fully enjoy the furnishings. So make sure that it fully reflects your personality: from bright colours, a motif on the wall, piles of pillows, a wall painting, a loft bed, large photo collages,... Everything is possible and allowed.

Choose stickers and washi tape

As a student you are not allowed to do what you want in every room. For example, you are often not allowed to paint and it is forbidden to wallpaper or drill holes in the wall. Do you still want to brighten things up without wall damage? Then there are many options. With a roll of Japanese washi tape you can frame your photos full of beautiful memories in a beautiful way and hang them on the wall. Or use the tape to create fun graphic motifs on your bare walls. Do you want to do it bigger? Then you can get started with wall sticker packages. Or hang a light rug on your wall for a colorful touch.

A touch of green

Not exactly the first thing you think of when you furnish your room, but a touch of green in your home really makes the difference. Bring some cuttings from home or go to the plant center. No idea what to choose from the huge range of plants? Succulents, cacti and sanseverias require hardly any maintenance and can easily go without water for several weeks if you are forgetful.
